Swimming Remedies for a Sore Back

Swimming Remedies for a Sore Back

Why Swimming?

Cardio is a distant dream for many people recovering from injuries or surgeries, although their desire to lead an active lifestyle is as strong as ever. They miss running, jogging, and being active in general because these activities cause pain when they attempt them. The alternative? Swimming. Experts suggest swimming as the ideal exercise for such patients due to its low-impact nature. Swimming hits a whole bunch of checkboxes whether you want to lose weight, build muscle, or feel refreshed, a swimming workout is an excellent alternative to a cardio workout.

Dr. Sadiq Sohani, Center for Spine and Pain Medicine,an accomplished physician with over 20 years of experience in the interventional treatment and diagnosis of acute and chronic pain, believes that aquatic exercises, primarily swimming, is one of the best remedies to ease lower backaches. Through his many years of practical experience in the field, he has become a leader in offering preeminent pain management solutions and care to his patients.

Dr. Sohani asserts that studies have shown that regular cardiovascular activity can help reduce pain to a great degree. In addition, he explains that the water’s buoyancy reduces the compressive load on the spine. At The Center for Spine & Pain Medicine, Dr. Sohani encourages patients to opt for a swimming routine that could help exercise essential muscles more effectively. Patients who are able to start and maintain a swimming routine may eventually be able to return to their normal active lifestyle.

LEARN TO SWIM BEFORE DIVING IN

It’s a good idea to take swimming lessons if you are interested in swimming and should probably consider investing in swimming lessons before diving in. If you feel uncomfortable in the water or aren’t sure how to swim, it’s essential to have some basic training first. Always remember to warm up in the pool’s shallow end or deep-water exercises before swimming in the deep end.

SWIMMING REMEDIES FOR A SORE BACK

Swimming is often a great way for people with acute or chronic back pain. The following swimming workouts can help ease bad backaches.

  • Hold onto the side of the pool, scissor kicking your legs. Turn around and try pulling your legs up in the direction of the water’s surface for a brief stretch once you’re done.

  • Stand straight with your feet firm on the pool floor and your back facing the wall. Bend your knees, then pull in your stomach muscles and push your hips forward until your back is parallel to the pool wall. Hold this pose for a few seconds, then release.

  •   To increase back strength, try marching in place while standing in the pool. Try lifting each leg as high as you can without bending your knees. As your muscles get stronger, you can try to pull each leg to waist level while remaining upright.

  • Using a pool noodle, take a firm grip of the pool noodle in front of you, and then lean forward with your back straight, keeping your elbows locked and feet anchored to the pool floor. Push down on the noodle to submerge it as you lean forward to form a semi-plank.Hold this pose for a little while.

  • Try push-ups during your swim. Start in the pool’s shallow end and face the wall with your feet on the floor. Place your hands on the pool edge, bend your arms at the elbow and lower yourself towards the wall. Repeat this exercise in sets of ten or fifteen. You can gradually build up the number of repetitions as your stamina builds up.

Dr. Sohani cautions that moderation is the key. Gradually increase the activity so that you do not cause unnecessary stress on the injury. As your stamina and body endurance increases, you can look towards  better health.
