Back Pain

The back is filled with muscles, ligaments, nerves, and more that help support the spine and our entire body. As such, even when we’re very careful, there are many ways that the back may be injured, whether the issue was avoidable or not.

Over time, just as with the rest of our body, the structures that make up the back may deteriorate and weaken. Bones may fracture, nerves may be compressed, or a muscle may be strained – all causing pain.

If you were involved in an auto accident, especially if you were rear-ended, issues may arise suddenly or even days or months down the road. What may just feel like soreness in your back following the accident or other traumatic event can often lead to something much worse, which is why proper evaluation and treatment is vital to a healthy recovery.

When dealing with pain in your back; if the pain is mild and bearable you may be able to find quick and easy relief with rest, exercise, or correcting your posture. But if the pain moves past the point of a mild inconvenience, you owe it to yourself to get checked out. When pain in the back turns into a stabbing or burning sensation, or begins to radiate to other parts of your body, causes weakness, or any other difficulties that are abnormal, a doctor must be consulted.

While back pain may come with age, there are several ways to stave off unnecessary issues:

Exercise

Keeping active and exercising regularly keeps the muscles in your back strong and prevents them from weakening and causing issues.

Posture

Watching your posture and assuring that you’re sitting and standing up in a proper position can also prevent unnecessary curvature of the spine and the pain that comes along with it.

Lifting

Lift with your knees, not your back! Heavy lifting, while not recommended, may be required in certain situations. When you must perform heavy lifting, allow your legs to bear the weight of the object and keep it as close to your body as possible. Do not twist when heavy lifting, and be sure to get assistance when needed.

While the potential issues that may affect your back may be numerous, our expert team of doctors at the Center for Spine and Pain Medicine is well-versed in finding the correct treatment plan for your unique situation and getting you moving on the road to recovery.
