Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative Disc Disease is a common cause of neck pain, caused by wear and tear on the spinal discs throughout the spine. Small tears may appear in the disc wall, which begins the pain. As the disc heals, scar tissue will form to repair the tear, though it is not as strong. If damage continues, the center of the disc will begin to fail cushioning the vertebrae above and below it.

Often, Degenerative Disc Disease causes mild pain which may be followed by episodes of intense pain. Occasionally, this may be joined shooting pain or numbness in the limbs.

When left untreated, symptoms can grow worse and may lead to:

  • Herniated Disc
  • Bone Spurs
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Joint Pain

Although “disease” is in the name, Degenerative Disc Disease is more of a condition that simply develops over time. Treatment will vary based on the cause of the condition.
