The minimally invasive procedure begins with the patient lying face down, with a cushion propped underneath the stomach to properly arch the spine – which makes finding the sacroiliac joint easier. The doctor will find the precise location of the joint with the help of a fluoroscope, and will numb the skin in that area. A needle is inserted through the skin and into the joint, where a mixture of the steroid and anesthetic fluid is used to coat the area, reducing the inflammation and numbing the area to begin to relieve pain.
Once the needle is removed and the very tiny wound is bandaged, the patient may return home, likely feeling the pain relief very shortly after the procedure.
